Social Innovation in Charity Centers for

People with Physical Disabilities

 

Objective

In several countries like Iran, people with physical disabilities are faced with numerous difficulties in obtaining equal participation in the society due to mistreatment from irresponsible organizations and communities. Charity centers, as groups concerned with physical disabilities, have the potential to ameliorate the gap between the disabled people and the society. Through studying user-centered design, experience design, and product service systems this project (MA thesis) investigated the 

 

process of designing services in charity centers for the physically disabled. The two key factors considered in designing services were substituting general services with individual consideration of users ‘needs and advocating the participation of users directly in every level.

Raid Charity Center

Raid charity center at Tehran has nearly 27 years experiences in servicing physically disabled people with the focus on physical therapy and education such as different art and computer classes. 

 

Research Methodology

 

Based on "Understanding your users"  book, process of designing services for Raid charity center was commenced with the UCD methods in regard of identification of Raid’s strengths and weaknesses. The affinity diagram was chosen for integration among the analysis of different methods results.

 

 In the subsequent phase, activities of successful international organizations were studied and as results,the opportunities and threats to the Raid center were identified. In this step the first phase of the project with the goal of identification of the strengths,weaknesses,opportunities, and threats (SWOT) for the Raid center with direct participation of its users was done. The results were used as 

 

the criteria of designing Raid’s services in the phases. In the following steps the center was subsequently transformed to a user-centered and then an agile center. The last step is about the process of transferring services to products. Users were transmitted to the main designers as they themselves changed the service processes of the Raid.
